Liberia Genocides
WHY DID THE GENOCIDE START?
WHY DID IT END?11/13/14
Charles Taylor aimed to make billions from exploiting the richest diamond fields in the world. Liberian civil war broke out in 1989. Charles Taylor led the National Patriotic Front and invaded the country to expel the Liberian dictator, Samuel Doe, assassinated him, and gained over 90% of Liberia. When Charles Taylor took over, the genocide began.
A peace agreement was signed in 2003 by the Government of Liberia, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy, Movement for Democracy in Liberia, and Liberia's 18 political parties. The Liberian National Transitional Government took office on October 14, 2003. This ended the genocide and Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50 years in jail.
